Stay Safe This Monsoon Season: Tips from GRICUA
Monsoon season in the Gila River Indian Community brings much-needed rain, but also powerful winds, lightning, and flash floods. At GRICUA, your safety is our top priority. As summer storms roll in, here are some important tips to help you and your family stay safe and prepared.
Electrical Safety First
Monsoons can cause sudden power outages, downed lines, and electrical surges. Keep these safety reminders in mind:
- Stay away from downed power lines. Always assume a line is live and dangerous, report it to GRICUA immediately at (520) 796-0600.
- Unplug electronics during a lightning storm to protect against power surges.
- Have flashlights and extra batteries ready in case of an outage. Avoid using candles due to fire risk.
Prepare for Strong Winds
High winds can knock over trees, poles, trampolines, and debris. Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines, tarps, and trash bins so they don’t become airborne hazards. Trim tree branches near your home or power lines if they look unstable.
Flooding Can Happen Fast
Flash floods are common during monsoon storms. Stay safe with these tips:
- Avoid driving through flooded roads. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person down, and 12 inches can carry away a car.
- Do not walk or play near arroyos, washes, or ditches during a storm.
- Stay informed with weather alerts and warnings via local news or mobile apps.
Build an Emergency Kit
Make sure your household is prepared with a storm emergency kit. It should include:
- Water and non-perishable food for at least 3 days
- First aid supplies
- Flashlights and batteries
- Cell phone chargers and backup power banks
- Medications and important documents
