Solar Project Updates

As of June 2, 2025, GRICUA has officially begun to receive power from the Box Canyon Solar Project.  GRICUA has a nearly 20-megawatt share of the 300-megawatt solar project located near Florence, AZ through a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Box Canyon Solar Project

The Box Canyon Solar Project continues GRICUA’s efforts to diversify power consumption in the Gila River Indian Community towards greater use of renewable energy.  In the fall of 2024 GRICUA interconnected with and began to receive power from the Gila River Indian Community’s Solar Over the Canal Project.

By the end of this year, 2025, GRICUA will break ground and begin construction of GRICUA’s own Lone Butte Solar Project which will be located right here on the Gila River Indian Community.

Projects like these, with their majority of fixed costs, will be strong contributors to GRICUA’s continued and future rate stabilization efforts.

Stay tuned as we continue to move towards a future of majority renewable energy consumption and continue the Community’s tradition of being good stewards of the environment and resources.

Line Extension: Knox to Park

At the end of the first week of March in 2025 our crew was working on some of the finishing touches on a line extension from the Knox substation to our Park substation. This project will further one of GRICUA’s long term strategic goals to increase our switching capability which will in turn increase our reliability for our Districts and our GRIC Gaming and Hospitality and commercial customers.

Transmission System Hardening Project

GRICUA is continually working to upgrade and maintain the power delivery system. The most recent job is the Transmission System Hardening Project. GRICUA’s engineering staff analyzed the area’s most likely to be damaged during monsoon storms and designed a project where every 3rd or 4th existing pole is replaced with a new pole that is designed to withstand winds up to 100 miles per hour. This project will help prevent cascading line damage during the most severe monsoon storms. Work is complete on the transmission line to the Santan substation. Crews will now be working on this project along Casa Blanca Rd. Please drive with extra caution in this area.
